The Shamrocks would deploy aboard USS America (CVA-66) in 1972, picking up the only Marine MiG kill of the Vietnam War. ![]() If current plans hold, the squadron is to be re-activated by 2025 as a F-35C Lightning II and based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. Known as the 'Thunderbolts', the squadron was deactivated on 23 April 2020. Next came the F-8 Crusader– with which they ran hot pad alerts at GTMO during the Cuban Missile Crisis– and then the F-4 Phantom in 1966. Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 (VMFA-251) was a United States Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet squadron. Squadron identifier markings are also included for TERs/MERs. VMFA-212 Lancers - 1 F-4J option (1 aircraft) from Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam (1972) & MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii (1972). Features correct blue/white/red stripes and accurate eagle insignias and eagles are printed in metallic silver. Squadron/aircraft identifier markings are also included for the external fuel tanks and pylons from the 1971 period. VMFA-115 Silver Eagles - 6 F-4B options (3 aircraft) from Chu Lai (1968-69) and Da Nang Air Bases, South Vietnam (1970-71) MCAS Iwakuni, Japan (1971), & Royal Thai Air Base Nam Phong aka “The Rose Garden”, Thailand (1972-73). Two primary exceptions are the early F-4J schemes of VMFA-232 and VMFA-334 which still carried the original factory new style of airframe data (not provided in this release). Vast majority of the aircraft covered on this sheet had this type of airframe data that was typical of reworked airframes in mid/late 1960s into the early 1970s. This extensive 1/48 sheet covers six Marine fighter attack squadrons operating the F-4B and F-4J Phantom in the Vietnam War (with some additional coverage when stationed in Japan and Hawaii).įull airframe data for one aircraft, including complete panel numbers/labels, is also included with this release.
